Routine Maintenance Work Restarts at Whiteshell Laboratories Site

The following information bulletin is in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Whiteshell Laboratories site.

Whiteshell, December 6, 2023 – CNL has restarted some non-essential work at Whiteshell Laboratories. All site-based staff and contractors returned to work the week of December 6, following a period of reduced operations.

As described in the Community Bulletin issued May 9, 2023, CNL paused all non-essential work at the site to address gaps in the fire response program. Since then, CNL has completed a thorough review of the Fire and Emergency Management program for the site. A number of substantial improvements have been implemented, including a more comprehensive training program for firefighting and rescue operations, the addition of a new, advanced-technology fire truck, and strengthened collaboration with the local Pinawa Fire Department.

CNL is taking a phased approach to the restart of non-essential work, beginning with the resumption of preventive and corrective maintenance work and activities that are low hazard and less complex.
