Response to Small Fire Resulting from Machining Work

The following information bulletin is in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL). 

Chalk River, 2020 October 29 – On Thursday, October 29, 2020 smoke was detected during routine machining work.

On discovery, safety protocols were followed, building staff were evacuated from the building, and CNL’s Fire Services responded to the building.  The source of the smoke was determined to be a small fire within a portion of an enclosed facility and was quickly extinguished.

An investigation into the cause is underway.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission was promptly notified of the event.

CNL confirms that there is no threat to workers, the public, the environment or nuclear safety related to this event.
