The Federal and Provincial Review team (FPRT) have completed their review of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ (CNL) responses to the 37 outstanding information requests that resulted from the technical review of CNL’s revised draft environmental impact statement (EIS) for the proposed Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF). In October 2020, the FPRT determined that CNL has sufficiently responded to all of the information requests.
CNL has revised the 2019 draft NSDF EIS to address the FPRT information requests and submitted the final NSDF EIS to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). The final EIS is being verified to confirm that information requests/comments have been addressed. Pending CNSC acceptance of the final EIS, it will be posted, along with FPRT and Public and Indigenous Groups’ comment tables, on the IAA website and CNSC web page. Once the CNSC reviews CNL’s final EIS and considers it to be complete, an environmental assessment report under CEAA 2012 will be drafted and made available for review by Indigenous groups and the public prior to a public Commission hearing.
Based on feedback CNL has heard from the public and Indigenous groups, CNL has posted the final NSDF EIS on our website. As indicated above, this document is pending final acceptance by CNSC.
A proposed date for the NSDF hearing will be set by the Commission Secretariat once staff have deemed that the application from CNL has met the regulatory requirements for both the Environmental Assessment and licensing.
