The following information bulletin is in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Douglas Point Waste Facility.
Tiverton, Ontario – 2020 December 11 – On Friday, December 4, 2020, a diesel fuel leak was detected during a routine nightly inspection at the Douglas Point Waste Facility, located by Tiverton, Ontario. On discovery, emergency and environmental protection protocols were followed and clean-up operations began immediately.
Further investigation has indicated that a diesel fuel line failure led to the release of less than 150 litres of diesel fuel to the ground. The event was external to the buildings and there was no radioactivity associated with this event. It was also confirmed that protective systems were functioning and no diesel fuel reached Lake Huron.
Remediation activities continue to recover diesel fuel and there is no ongoing threat to the environment.
CNL reported this release and mitigating steps to the Spills Action Hotline and notified the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
CNL confirms that there is no threat to workers, the public, the environment or nuclear safety related to this event.
