The following information bulletin is in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL).
Chalk River, ON – June 24, 2021 – On June 15, 2021, a shipment of controlled materials arrived at the Chalk River site from an external customer.
A routine radiological assessment of the shipment indicated the possibility of exterior contamination. A thorough inspection of the shipment was conducted, including the overnight isolation of the transportation trailer. Assessment results confirmed that there was no associated risk.
CNL’s Inspection did identify inaccurate package labelling with the incorrect United Nations number, Proper Shipping Name and package content inventory.
CNL reported this event to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
CNL also advised the shipment consignor of the event and has shared our findings so that a reoccurrence could be avoided.
CNL confirms that there is no threat to workers, the public, the environment or nuclear safety related to this event.
