Response to Smoke Detector Activation

(Chalk River, 2020, October 26) The following information bulletin is in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL).

On October 22, 2020, CNL Fire Services responded to a smoke detector activation in a building used for the management and processing of waste.

On arrival, response personnel detected smoke coming from the building ventilation. It was determined the source of the smoke was a ventilation fan motor. The small fire was quickly extinguished.

No staff were in the building at the time. There was no radiological release to the environment.

Measures were taken to secure the building.  An investigation into the cause is underway.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission was promptly notified of the event.
CNL confirms that there is no threat to workers, the public, the environment or nuclear safety related to this event.
