Fire in cabinet within NRU reactor building

The following information bulletin is in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL).

On Saturday, January 25, 2020 a fire occurred within a metal utility cabinet in the NRU reactor building. On discovery, CNL’s on site fire department was notified and responded quickly to extinguish the fire. An investigation into the cause is underway.

The NRU reactor was not operating, and has been in a permanent shutdown state since March 31, 2018.

There were no injuries, no radiological releases to the environment, and there is no risk to staff, the public, or the environment as a result of this event.

This event was reported to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).
