The following information bulletin is in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories site.
Pinawa, MB – September 02, 2026 – CNL’s Radiation Assessment Team has now concluded its work at the scene of the accident that occurred earlier this morning in Manitoba. The integrity of the package has been verified to be safe and intact, with no releases to the environment detected. Arrangements are being made to return the package to the Chalk River Laboratories campus.
At approximately 6:00 a.m. EDT this morning, a commercial vehicle transporting a package of radioactive material from the Chalk River Laboratories was involved in a traffic accident in a location east of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
There is no indication that the package has been damaged or that any radioactive material has been released. CNL’s Radiological Assessment Team has been deployed from the nearby Whiteshell Laboratories campus to the scene of the accident to verify the integrity of the package and provide any further assistance to responders.
CNL is working closely with the carrier, Transport Canada, and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) to monitor and support the incident response.
The transportation of radioactive materials is a highly regulated activity that must meet the stringent requirements of both Transport Canada and CNSC before being approved. Canada has decades of experience in transporting radioactive materials and has an excellent safety record, and many thousands of shipments containing radioactive material are transported safely in Canada each year.
