GFP submits application for licence to prepare site

Global First Power (GFP), supported by Ontario Power Generation and Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation have announced their submission of an application to Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) for a “Licence to Prepare Site” for a small modular reactor (SMR) on Atomic Energy of Canada Limited’s property at the Chalk River Laboratories.

This application submission is the first step in the CNSC licensing process. The CNSC is undertaking a sufficiency review, and if the project description is assessed as complete, the next step would be for the CNSC to issue a Notice of Commencement, following which the Project Description would become available for public comment as part of the environmental assessment process.

While this announcement reflects an important milestone for the project proponent, Global First Power, this should not be interpreted as project approval; further discussions and stringent evaluations will continue. Today’s announcement is simply an update on progress being made by one respondent to CNL’s invitation to Site a Demonstration SMR process.

The invitation remains open with several proponents, all at different stages in the process.
