Annual industry awards honour nuclear industry representatives who have made exceptional contributions to the field of nuclear science and technology
Chalk River, ON – August 28, 2020 – Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), Canada’s premier nuclear science and technology organization, is pleased to announce that two of its employees have been recognized by the Canadian nuclear industry as recipients of the 2020 Canadian Nuclear Achievement Awards. Presented jointly by the Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) and the Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS), the annual awards program honours those who have made exceptional contributions, technical and non-technical, to the field of nuclear science and technology.

The 2020 Canadian Nuclear Achievement Award recipients from CNL include a member of its Advanced Reactor Technology team for their lifelong commitment to the nuclear industry, and a member of CNL’s Communications team, who worked alongside SandBay Entertainment to produce a documentary on the history of CNL’s NRU reactor. More details on the recipients, the award and their accomplishments include:
Education & Communication Award: Philip Kompass (CNL), Alastair McIvor (former CNL employee, currently with the International Atomic Energy Agency), Sarah Fodey (SandBay Entertainment), Han Nguyen (SandBay Entertainment) and Amanda Barakat (SandBay Entertainment) were given the 2020 Education & Communication Award, which recognizes significant efforts in improving the understanding of nuclear science and technology among educators, students and the public.
This team was responsible for producing the documentary “Of Great Service: The Story of National Research Universal,” which was honoured for effectively disseminating the story of the NRU Reactor and the people who worked there for a wide audience in Canada and internationally. According to the evaluators, the documentary has improved understanding of the historical significance and the decades of scientific contributions of the NRU reactor, by connecting the audience with the people who supported the safe operation of the reactor over the years. Collectively, the film has been screened in person to more than 3,500 people, across Canada and the United States. Feedback received has been extraordinarily positive, with many comments on the quality of storytelling, a new appreciation for the facility and the team that worked there, as well as the respectful way that the story of the closure of the NRU reactor was told. Fellow of the Canadian Nuclear Society: Dr. Metin Yetisir, a principal scientist and the section head of the Advanced Reactor Technology team at CNL, was appointed a Fellow of the CNS Award, a membership category established by the Society to denote extensive contributions to the Society and meritorious service to the nuclear field in Canada.
Mr. Yetisir’s technical expertise includes small modular reactors (SMRs), advanced reactors, safety concepts, CANDU reactor systems and components, vibration, thermalhydraulics, heat transfer and residual stresses. His research work on SMRs and Supercritical Water-Cooled Reactor (SCWR) concepts has been recognized both in Canada and internationally. Mr. Yetisir has also been a lead contributor to three patents on the Canadian SCWR concept. Throughout his work, Mr. Yetisir has demonstrated impressive technical capabilities, mature judgement, and breadth of experience, having published more than 70 conference papers, 11 peer-reviewed journal publications and 4 patents related to nuclear reactors and components. Mr. Yetisir has also been an active CNS member for more than 10 years, having successfully chaired and organized numerous CNS conferences, workshops and technical meetings.
