Chalk River Laboratories recognized as largest fundraiser for annual campaign supporting those in need throughout Renfrew County

Chalk River, January 18, 2019 – Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), Canada’s premier nuclear science and technology organization, is pleased to announce that its employees at the Chalk River Laboratories have raised over $80,000 for the Renfrew County United Way (RCUW) through the 2018 fundraising campaign. Every fall, CNL employees participate in a series of fundraising activities in support of the local RCUW chapter, which delivers programs that are designed to improve the lives of those in need throughout Renfrew County communities.

“The Renfrew County United Way works to give members of our communities the chance at a great life, addressing issues like poverty, homelessness, mental illness and violence by supporting much-needed programs for youths, seniors and others who require community assistance,” commented Mark Lesinski, CNL President and Chief Executive Officer. “Once again, I’m proud of the compassion demonstrated by CNL employees, who dug deep into their own pockets to help the less fortunate in Renfrew County. I’m also pleased to say that this generosity extended to our other sites in Whiteshell and Port Hope, who also raised much-needed funds for their own local United Way chapters.”

CNL employees have been participating in fundraising activities for the United Way since the early 1960s, with annual campaigns held at the company’s Chalk River and Port Hope locations in Ontario, and at the Pinawa site in Manitoba. Collectively, employees at these three locations raised over $125,000 this year, a tremendous achievement that speaks to the important role the United Way plays in supporting the less fortunate across Canada.

“Whether you sang your heart out, baked muffins or flipped pancakes, I’d like to express my sincere thanks to everyone at CNL who helped make this year’s United Way campaign another resounding success,” added Doug Tennant, 2018 Chair of the RCUW Board. “While we don’t always see the impacts of this fundraising in our daily lives, I can assure you that they mean a great deal to people who rely on them, and that you are making a meaningful difference in our local communities.”

In addition to cash and ongoing payroll donations, CNL staff participated in various fundraising activities during the campaign at the Chalk River Laboratories. A number of brave CNL employees took the stage for the “Karaoke in the Caf” event, the human resources team held their annual bake sale, the newly added paper airplane contest was a resounding success, the ever popular “Pet Photo Contest” returned, and employees turned out in droves for the traditional pancake breakfast, which was prepared by the cafeteria team at Brown’s Fine Foods and served up by the CNL executive team and United Way volunteers.
