Continued progress towards the submission of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has been working diligently on providing responses to the information requests from the Federal Provincial Review Team (FPRT) on the 2019 draft Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). As well, CNL has completed preparing responses to all of the public and Indigenous Groups comments on the 2017 draft EIS for a completeness check by to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). Pending completion of the CNSC review, CNL is prepared to submit the final EIS package to the CNSC in December 2020, at which time the FPRT will confirm that all information requests/comments from their review of the 2019 draft EIS have been incorporated into the final EIS. Once the CNSC has accepted a final EIS, the final EIS and comment tables will be posted on the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry, as well as on the CNSC website. Based on the current timelines, it is anticipated that the final EIS package will be posted in early 2021.

A proposed date for the NSDF hearing will be set by the Commission Secretariat once staff have deemed that the application from CNL has met the regulatory requirements for both EA and licensing.
