Shroud lifting event at the Chalk River Laboratories

The following information bulletin is in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL).

On August 15, 2018, CNL operators were retrieving a fuel-covering shroud from inside a tile hole located at the Chalk River Laboratories site.  While the retrieval operations were underway, radiation detectors indicated that radiation levels were exceeding those levels expected for this activity.

At the time of the event, work was stopped, the fuel shroud was returned to the original storage position, and equipment was placed into a safe state.  CNL notified the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) as an item of regulatory interest on August 16.

The cause of the event is under investigation, and similar retrieval activity is on hold pending investigation results

CNL confirms that there is no threat to workers, the public, the environment or nuclear safety related to this event.
