Response to Smoke from Roof Work at CNL’s Whiteshell Site

The following information bulletin is shared in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Whiteshell Laboratories.

Pinawa, MB – September 23, 2025 – On Thursday, September 18, 2025, a contractor performing roof repair on a building at the Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) site noticed smoke coming from under a roof ventilation cap. On discovery, the contractor utilized handheld fire extinguishers to extinguish the source of the smoke. CNL’s on site fire department were notified and responded to assess the event and safely secure the area.  Thermal imaging determined that no detectable heat remained.  Additional monitoring was put in place for several hours.

No employees were injured as a result of this event, and there were no off-site consequences to members of the public or the environment.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has been notified about the event.
