Chalk River Laboratories power outage

The following information bulletin is in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL).

Chalk River, 2021 December 15 – During the evening of December 11, the CRL site experienced a loss of Class IV power. Hydro One identified the cause for the loss of electrical power as downed power distribution lines in the region, the downing was attributed to weather conditions.

Hydro One made necessary repairs and Class IV power was restored to the site at approximately 3:00 p.m., the following day, December 12

During the electrical outage, first responders attended the site, CRL facilities operated safely on backup power supplies. Prior to resuming operations, the site underwent recovery activities including safety walk downs and inspections.

There were no injuries and there have been no radiological releases to the public, environment or employees as a result of this event.

This event was reported to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).
