NAYGN Chalk River chapter recognized for excellence in diversity & inclusion

North American Young Generation in Nuclear awards ‘Best Chapter in Diversity and Inclusion’ to Chalk River Chapter

Chalk River, ON – July 30, 2024 – Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), Canada’s premier nuclear science and technology organization, is pleased to announce that the Chalk River chapter of the North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN) has been selected as ‘Best Chapter in Diversity and Inclusion’ in North America by the NAYGN Awards Committee. Given to the chapter which demonstrates excellence in Diversity & Inclusion, the award was presented earlier this month to Heidi MacLeod, Networking and Social Chair for the Chalk River chapter, at the annual NAYGN Continental Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina.

With a membership of just over 200 people, nearly all of whom work at the Chalk River Laboratories campus, the local organization’s activities stood out among over 150 chapters which make up NAYGN’s total membership of over 10,000 people.

“Having previously been recognized for excellence in public engagement, and now for their efforts to promote Diversity & Inclusion, the NAYGN Chalk River chapter deserves our respect and admiration for all that they do to promote and foster a culture of integrity, trust and inclusiveness,” commented Trina Meloche, Director of HR Governance & Workplace Culture at CNL. “On behalf of everyone at CNL, I want to congratulate them on this award, which validates all of their hard work and creativity, and that recognizes the impact that they continue to have here at the Chalk River Laboratories, the other sites we manage, and across our entire industry here in Canada.”

“The NAYGN Chalk River chapter is proud to be recognized through this award, which is due to the hard work of our membership and in particular, the efforts of our DE&I Chair, Osama Ghani,” commented Dylan Verburg, President of NAYGN’s Chalk River chapter. “As a chapter we are committed to building respectful relationships within our workplace and the community at large. We are proud to be recognized as a leader in D&I amongst our industry peers and are committed to continually striving for excellence in this regard.”

Among the DE&I activities held and hosted by the Chalk River chapter this year was a webinar hosted by NAYGN with CNL’s Director of HR Governance and DE&I Coordinator to announce the launch of CNL’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) committee. The webinar provided an overview of key concepts in DE&I, helping attendees better understand the importance of the new program. It also explored CNL’s journey in DE&I and the important role that the committee would play within CNL. The webinar concluded with a call for applications to the committee, and general actions and opportunities for attendees to integrate DE&I into their work.

With chapters spread out across North America, NAYGN was established to provide opportunities for a young generation of nuclear enthusiasts to develop strong leadership and professional skills, create lifelong connections, engage, and inform the public, and inspire today’s nuclear technology professionals to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
