On September 30, Vexos Inc. announced (press release) that it has received Health Canada authorization for the production of the MVM ventilator.  This paves the way for Vexos to manufacture and supply 10,000 ventilators to the Government of Canada as part of a national, made-in-Canada, effort to treat patients most severely affected by the COVID-19 virus.  This is very positive news, strengthening our resources in the fight against COVID-19.  It is also a very positive reflection on the skill, dedication and determination of the MVM consortium, which though initiated in Italy grew to include Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, TRIUMF, SNOLAB, McDonald Institute, Vexos and JMP Solutions in Canada.

In the early days of the pandemic, the MVM consortium members saw an urgent need for more ventilators to treat the most severely affected by the pandemic and quickly turned their efforts to creating a simple design that could be easily assembled. As Canada’s national nuclear laboratory, we have a unique and broad skill set which we were able to apply to the development of this life-saving technology.

Engineering, instrumentation, software development, technicians, trades and business professionals all responded when the call to action was issued. Here in Chalk River or across the country in Fredericton, many across our organization put in long hours under great pressure to move this ahead.

I am immensely proud of what the team has helped to accomplish, and thank everyone who made a contribution, directly or indirectly, to this momentous project.
