Solving the world’s most pressing challenges starts with science. From climate change to health and energy challenges, the innovative projects and unwavering passion showcased at the Renfrew Regional Science Fair and the Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF) prove that this generation of young scientists is eager to take part in discovering solutions.
As a lead-up to the national fair, Renfrew County, home to the Chalk River Laboratories, in collaboration with Youth Science Canada, held a regional science fair that featured 52 projects on display by 57 students from surrounding communities and the North Bay area. Finalists from the fair got to join their peers at the biggest STEM education event in Canada.
The 2025 Canada Wide Science Fair, hosted in Fredericton, NB, by Youth Science Canada, serves as a platform to celebrate and highlight emerging scientists on a national stage. The students presented 339 projects to over 5,000 visitors, showcasing the talent and creativity of Canada’s youth.
For over 60 years, this annual event has brought together some of Canada’s brightest young minds – supporting their passions, showcasing their projects, and awarding their efforts to nurture their talents in STEM. Beyond competition, the fair offers participants the opportunity to receive recognition for their innovations, connect with like-minded peers, and gain exposure to career and academic opportunities.
Support for local fairs, including the Renfrew Regional Fair and the CWSF, is part of our mission at CNL to empower future leaders in STEM fields. The fairs encourage budding scientists not only to explore their passion for science but also to understand how their discoveries can improve the world around us. To recognize some exceptional projects that exemplified these qualities, we were proud to introduce two new CNL awards as part of the Special Awards Category at this year’s CWSF; the CNL Visionary Award and the CNL Fusion Award.
The CNL Visionary Award celebrate forward-thinking solutions for global challenges, while the CNL Fusion Award celebrates multi-disciplinary collaboration in scientific problem-solving. We are hopeful that our contribution will help encourage recipients to make full use of their talents and pursue scientific careers, paving the way for a brighter tomorrow.
A big congratulations to the winners:
Fusion Award: Cindy Cheng– 3D Bioprinting Soft Microrobotic Niches for Stem Cell Delivery
Visionary Award (Junior): Ronin Faber, Willem Vuurmans – Quiet Propellers for Marine Conservation
Visionary Award (Intermediate): Justin (Jiaxing) Guo – Development of a Non-Fouling Physicochemical Filter for Micro/nano-sized microplastics (MNMPs) in Post Primary Wastewater Effluent
Visionary Award (Senior): Keyu Hu – VisionnAIre: an innovative and promising AI approach for precise and accessible eye diagnosis
We look forward to seeing your work make a difference in the lives of Canadians, and are pleased to know that the future of science is in safe hands!
