2017 NSDF Environmental Impact Statement

The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) is now available for review.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has submitted the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Near Surface Disposal Facility Project. The proposed project is for the siting and construction of the Near Surface Disposal Facility, which would be used for the disposal of mostly solid, low level radioactive waste.

The submission of the EIS to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) is part of the Environmental Assessment process CNL is undertaking for the Project.

In order for the Near Surface Disposal Facility Project to move forward, the Environmental Assessment, which is carried out under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) 2012, and regulated under the authority of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, must be completed.

Then, under the Nuclear Safety Control Act (NSCA), the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission will make a decision on licensing. For the Near Surface Disposal Facility Project, a decision of approval under CEAA 2012 must be given before a decision is made under the NSCA.

Ensuring your voice is heard

With our submission of the Near Surface Disposal Facility’s Environmental Impact Statement, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission will be accepting comments from the public and Indigenous groups for the next 60 days. Participation from members of the public and Indigenous groups is a crucial part of the Environmental Assessment Process.
