CNSC approves amendment of CNL’s current Chalk River Site Operating Licence

Chalk River, 2016 July 07 — Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is pleased to report that the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has approved our application to extend the operating licence for the Chalk River Laboratories site for an additional 17 months.

The operating licence amendment was granted following a one-day Commission hearing in Ottawa on 2016 April 06. At the hearing, CNL experts, CNSC staff and community and industry stakeholders made written submissions and/or oral presentations to the Commission. Based on CNL’s application and submissions, CNSC staff recommended the licence include the following amendments:

  1. Extend the current licence a further 17 months to 2018 March 31;
  2. Removal of Licence Condition 16.1 requiring a single extended outage for NRU maintenance and inspection in each calendar year enabling CNL to move to a more effective schedule; and
  3. Approval of the plan for the operation of NRU beyond 2016 October, thereby confirming acceptance that Licence Condition 16.3 has been met.

“We would like to sincerely thank the members of our local and nuclear communities who participated in the public hearing," added Bill Pilkington, Vice-President Operations and Chief Nuclear Officer . "We truly appreciate the level of support for and interest in CNL."
