Smoke discovered during equipment testing

Chalk River, 2017 August 23 – The following information bulletin is in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL).

On Thursday, August 17, a small fire occurred in an electrical motor cabinet in the NRU reactor. The cause of the fire was a relay overheating, and the fire self-extinguished.

The reactor was in a scheduled shutdown when the event occurred, and the motor was being operated as part of a planned equipment test. On discovery, electrical power to the motor was disconnected. CNL’s on site fire department responded and a small amount of extinguishing agent was applied as a precautionary measure. The ‘all clear’ was given a short time later.

The relay was replaced and the motor was returned to service to support ongoing operations.

There were no injuries and there have been no radiological releases to the public, environment or employees as a result of this event.

This event was reported to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).
