Chalk River Laboratories power outage

Chalk River, 2017 July 31 – The following information bulletin is in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL).

On Sunday July 30, the Chalk River Laboratories site experienced a loss of electrical power as supplied by Hydro One.

The cause for the loss of electrical power was identified by Hydro One as a breakdown of a Hydro One power distribution line located on the Chalk River site. The downed line caused a small fire in the outer area, away from the main campus. CNL first responders attended the scene of the fire and it was quickly extinguished and controlled.

Hydro One made necessary repairs and power was restored to the site at approximately 5:30 pm. During the electrical outage, CRL facilities operated safely on backup power supplies. There were no injuries and there have been no radiological releases to the public, environment or employees as a result of this event.

Hydro One has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the line failure. This event was reported to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).
