CNL responds to alarm in small utility building

Chalk River, 2017 April 7  – The following information bulletin is in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL). 

On Friday April 7, CNL fire response personnel responded to an alarm at a small utility building located at the Chalk River site. The unoccupied structure is an access point to below grade utility services.

Upon arrival at the utility building a small fire was extinguished by CNL first responders. CNL’s Radiation Protection specialists confirmed that there was no radiological contamination or release.

Alarms activated and fire response functioned as required. There were no injuries related to this event and there have been no radiological releases, to the public, environment or employees. CNL has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of this event. This event was reported to the CNSC.
