Building 405 false safety alarm

Chalk River, August 12, 2014 - The following information bulletin is in accordance with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories.

AECL reports that a safety alarm sounded at its Nuclear Fuel Fabrication Facility (Building 405) on Monday morning at approximately 11:10 a.m. As a result of this alarm, a site-wide stay-in was activated, directing Chalk River Laboratory employees to stay indoors and to follow necessary emergency procedures.

After responding to the safety alarm, AECL personnel determined that the alarm conditions were false. As a result, normal operations were resumed at approximately 11:55 a.m. at the Chalk River site.

AECL confirms that there is no threat to employees, the public, the environment or nuclear safety related to this event.
