Chalk River Information Bulletin

2014 NRU Extended Outage completed on schedule

(2014 May 16) The following information bulletin is in accordance with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories.

During the evening shift of May 13, the NRU reactor was successfully returned to service following the completion of our fourth annual, 30-day planned extended outage.
Successful execution of the annual extended outage requires months of planning which leads to a demanding schedule of activities that is carried out by a dedicated team of AECL employees from across the organization. While the outage was not without its challenges, we were successful in delivering on our commitments to our regulator and customers while completing on schedule. The Outage Team completed approximately 1,200 activities safely, with no lost time injuries and no significant radiological issues.

The NRU is currently operating at high power, producing medical isotopes and available to provide vital research and testing support to the science community, universities, and industry from across Canada and around the world.
