NPD Open House

Take a visit to Canada's first nuclear power reactor!

The 20 MW Nuclear Power Demonstration (NPD) reactor was Canada’s first nuclear power reactor to supply electricity to Ontario's electrical distribution grid. NPD began operations in 1962 and for 25 years served as an important training facility for future reactor engineers and operators.

The reactor was permanently shut down in 1988, and is presently in the Storage with Surveillance phase of decommissioning under a licence issued by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).

The NPD site is located on the south bank of the Ottawa River near the town of Rolphton Ontario, roughly 3 km downstream from the Des Joachims Generating Station and approximately 25 km upstream from the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL).

From Deep River:
The NPD site is located on Highway 17 between Deep River, ON and Rolphton, ON.
The NPD site is located on the right-hand side of the highway, about one kilometre past Cutler Lane and 16 kilometres from the traffic lights in Deep River.
The 911 number is 36510 and there is a CNL sign on the entrance gate.

CNL is hosting an Open House at the NPD facility

We understand the interest in NPD – its history and our decommissioning plan. That’s why we want to share information on our NPD Closure Project and encourage the public to get involved.
