(2015 February 20) Eighteen teams of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) Chalk River employees and retirees took to the ice at the Petawawa Civic Centre, January 14-16 for the 10th annual Black Bears hockey tournament. Players showed a great deal of sportsmanship and love for some healthy competition amongst colleagues making the tournament a sure success.
While there were many winners on the ice that week, the real winners were those worthy causes close to the heart of the Renfrew County community. Through entry fees, prize tables, jersey raffles, and a toonie drive the tournament raised $16,000!
The funds raised were provided to “Kisses for Abbigail” in support of Abbigail Moreau, a brave little Pembroke girl fighting her battle against Opsoclonus Myoclonus Syndrome (OMS), a rare neurological disorder; the Pembroke Regional Hospital’s Image Matters campaign to bring an MRI machine to the Ottawa Valley; and the family of another local girl to help in her fight against leukemia.
Dean Johnston of the Black Bears Hockey Club was humbled by the support that CNL employees showed towards this effort. “It is amazing that such a small event can make such a big difference. This tournament marked our 10th year running and we look forward to more success for the Black Bears tournament and further support for these deserving local causes in the years to come.”
