The following information is provided in accordance with CNL's commitment to enhance its voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) or Whiteshell (WL) Laboratories. 

Shroud lifting event at the Chalk River Laboratories

August 17, 2018

On August 15, CNL operators were retrieving a fuel-covering shroud from inside a tile hole located at the Chalk River Laboratories site. While the retrieval operations were underway, radiation detectors indicated that radiation levels were exceeding those levels expected for this activity.

Electrical cable severed during construction site clean-up at the Chalk River Laboratories

June 14, 2018

On Wednesday, June 13, 2018, CNL was notified that an energized 600 volt cable had been cut by a contractor conducting site cleanup activities at a location outside the main campus. On notification of this event, CNL suspended further work by the contractor until an investigation has been completed, and has directed that all related CNL work activities be reviewed.

Signage damaged at the Chalk River Laboratories

June 7, 2018

CNL employees performing general maintenance on signage at the entrance to the Chalk River Laboratories noticed that the signage was damaged. The damage appears to be related to off-site actions and has been reported to the Ontario Provincial Police for further investigation.

CNL extinguishes small brush fire at its Whiteshell site

June 6, 2018

On the morning of Wednesday, June 06 2018, on routine inspection, CNL employees discovered a small brush fire at the company’s Whiteshell Laboratories nuclear site in Pinawa, Manitoba. The fire, which was immediately extinguished by Whiteshell Laboratories Emergency Services Firefighters, encompassed approximately 2 – 3 hectares of unaffected lands at the site. Unaffected lands are areas at the site that have never been utilized or impacted by CNL operations, and are distant from the main campus.

Training Incident

May 29, 2018

During a security related training exercise held off-site on May 28, there was an incident that involved CNL employees.
