Chalk River, 2016 June 16 – The following information bulletin is in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL).
CNL reports that a safety alarm sounded at its Nuclear Fuel Fabrication Facility (Building 405) on Wednesday afternoon at approximately 3:15 p.m. As a result of this alarm, a site-wide stay-in was activated, directing Chalk River Laboratories employees to stay indoors and to follow necessary emergency procedures.
After responding to the safety alarm, CNL personnel determined that it was a false alarm. As a result, normal operations were resumed at approximately 4:00 p.m. at the Chalk River site.
An investigation is underway to determine why the alarm sounded. All Building 405 production activities have been suspended until the alarm unit is repaired and tested.
CNL confirms that there is no threat to employees, the public, the environment or nuclear safety related to this event.
