2019 Whiteshell Laboratories Site Relicensing

CNL encourages the public to get involved

CNL has applied to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) to renew its decommissioning  licence for its Whiteshell Laboratories (WL). The application has a proposed licence expiry date of 2029 December 31 and, if granted, would authorize CNL to continue to safely remediate WL, which is composed of redundant nuclear facilities, laboratories, waste management area and supporting buildings and structures.

The proposed 10-year licence would enable CNL to continue to safely decommission and remediate the site, and ensure the closure of the site fulfils our commitment to protection of people and the environment, now and into the future. It is important to recognize that the review of the proposed in situ decommissioning of the WR-1 reactor is undergoing a separate licensing and environmental regulatory review and is not in the scope of this re-licensing.

CNL recognizes that how we operate is important to our neighbouring communities and to Canadians in general. That’s why we encourage the public to get involved.

The CNSC offers members of the public the opportunity to comment on our licence request, so please consider doing so. Requests to intervene must be filed with the Commission Secretariat.  Requests must include a written submission of the comments to be presented to the Commission, a statement setting out whether the intervenor wishes to prepare a written submission only or a written submission and oral presentation, and the name, address and telephone number of the intervenor.

More information, including deadlines, will be provided at a later date.
